Artisan butcher Van der Zee packages and distributes meat from an 8,600 m² site in Twello, part of parent company HANOS since 2023. The company constantly weighs the balance between taste, food safety, shelf life, sustainability, presentation and price, and packaging plays a big role in that.
Van der Zee wanted to take a step forward: from a three-layer skin pack to a more sustainable version with a premium look. The new packaging had to keep the meat fresh just as long, produce less waste and be flexible and efficient to produce at the same time. High demands, which the company brought to Sismatec, with whom they have worked for years.
The flatskin pack wraps the meat tightly and protectively, and goes straight into the production line. That way you can package burgers, for example, at up to a hundred per minute directly from the line. The switch resulted in more sustainable packaging with a premium look, less waste and products that stay fresh just as long.
Account manager Jasper Slaghekke of Sismatec followed the packaging process closely to make sure the result matched expectations. Operations manager Willy Grooters: “We continuously evaluate the balance between taste, food safety, shelf life, sustainability, presentation and price. Those are high demands, which we were happy to hand over to Sismatec. The result is excellent, cuts a lot of waste and keeps our products fresh just as long.”
