For tomato growers, a lot comes down to efficiency. In most packaging lines for products such as tomatoes and strawberries, filling trays is still largely done by hand. That takes manpower, and it calls for a smart setup of the whole line, so the people at the line can keep filling. A common bottleneck is the traysealer. As soon as it stops, for example during a film change or a small breakdown, the whole line comes to a standstill. That causes delays and puts unnecessary pressure on the staff.
Together with Sismatec and Sismation, RedStar tackled the whole process. A semi-automatic filling and weighing system made the work more efficient. Staff place the first tomatoes into the trays on the conveyor by hand. The trays are weighed and automatically topped up with smaller clusters until they reach the right weight.
To stop the traysealer from causing unnecessary standstill, Sismation developed a buffer system. Six parallel conveyor lanes carry the filled trays to the traysealer. Those lanes work as a buffer: staff can keep feeding in trays, even when the traysealer stops for a moment. Once everything is running at full speed again, the traysealer clears the buffer quickly thanks to its higher capacity.
The side guides of the buffer can be adjusted in one move. That way you switch the system to a different tray format quickly, without losing time. Handy for product changes and seasonal variation.
